The Last Winter of Dani Lancing A Novel P D Viner Books

The ghost of Dani Lancing, a college student at the time of her death, tries to lead her father to solve her murder. Everyone involved: Dani's ghost, her parents, her boyfriend, they all have their own visions of the end of Dani's life, and they all have secrets. Over the course of the book their visions and their secrets slowly come to light. The book does a reasonably good job of maintaining suspense. I wanted to find out, once and for all, who killed Dani and why. I was not as taken with the conclusion of the mystery, which seemed kind of ridiculous and kind of a letdown. The interesting part of this book is the way in which all of the individual characters were drawn, and how each had his or her own perceptions. In sum, a reasonably decent unraveling, but a rather sub-par solution.

The Last Winter of Dani Lancing A Novel P D Viner Books Reviews

The book is set in time lapses, and it takes a second to find your footing, but overall a very good read.
This book starts out confusing and remains hard to follow up until the end. I'm surprised I made it to the end, I was ready to put it down, but didn't want to waste my money. The synopsis makes it sound like such a good story, and it could have been, but the way the book was written is very dissapointing.
I loved this book by P.D. Viner - from the title and cover to the creative style and surprising ending. I often know how a mystery or crime novel will end, but with this one I had no clue. It kept me engaged and curious. I'm looking forward to more books by this author.
Most of this book was fun to read but as the story continues it becomes more and more convoluted and unrealistic and the characters become increasingly annoying to the point where I began to wish they would all kill each other. The tone of this book is also all over the place. At some points it seems to be trying to deal poignantly with themes of grief and revenge and at others it reads like a cheap thriller. It could do both, but something is just off about the tone for me and I didn't think it worked. It reminds me of the script for a thriller tv show mixed with The Lovely Bones and erratically shifting between the two. There are some major plot problems (in my opinion) and the deus ex machina at the end was as convenient and unbelievable as many of the events. I assumed for some reason that the author of this book was female until I read about a quarter into it and realized that the author had to be a male. SPOILER I can't see any woman writing the character of Tom and believing him to be at all sympathetic to female readers. Tom made my skin crawl. He is a violent bully and patronizing in the paternal and obsessive way he interferes in Dani's life. Many women have had a guy in their life that they tell they are not interested in who can't accept it. If the guy persists anyways despite multiple rejections he becomes creepy. When he starts beating up people to control the options in your life he becomes a slime ball. Viner seems to want to portray Tom as flawed but sympathetic but he just came off as an obsessive mentally sick obsessed weirdo. By the end of the book I also couldn't stand Dani. All this fuss over someone who just gave up on herself. Having her do drugs is fine, but make her a fighter, not somebody who gets beat up and rejected by her married lover and then decides to go sell herself to gang members. The book did keep me reading to see who the murderer was (big letdown) so I will try another by this author before giving up on him.
I'm SURPRISED THIS HASN'T GOT THE RECOGNITION THAT IT DESERVES.
Very interesting mystery. I found it hard to get into at first, but once things fell into place, it was an excellent "Who dunnit"
With a convoluted plot line the story looses credibility from its many twists, coincidences, hidden connections and people doing the wrong thing for what they consider to be the right reasons.

It's not a bad book, but the end kind of lost me. The only character I even remotely liked was Dani's dad Jim - his sanity was still clearly in question. Her mom, Tom, Donavan and really everyone else were pretty horrible. It was nearly impossible to like any of them.
The beginning of this book was a little slow and hard to follow, but once I got used to the author's pacing, I did enjoy the book. I did not find the revelations to be as interesting or shocking as I had hoped and the way that the story goes back and forth through time in addition to changing which characters the narrator is following makes the story line convoluted, even after you get used to it. The story might have been better if it was written in a different way.
