I thought this story was very cute, short and sweet. Bethany and Renner have a history together, but while Bethany clearly remembers him, he doesn't recognize her. Renner is my kind of hero. He's loyal and loving and has eyes only for Bethany once he realizes who she is. This story does not have long, tedious back flashes of their history together, but rather, incorporates a lot of it in their thoughts and memories in the present and in a way that is very sweet. I was in the mood for a sweet romance and I really liked this short (it did have some spice for those who don't like it too sweet).Tags : A Mate's Wish: (Ouachita Mountain Shifters, Book 0.5) - Kindle edition by P. A Mate Wish Ouachita Mountain Shifters Book 05 edition by P Jameson Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
It is so hard to break from the conditioning of our youth, but this book gives us hope that it is possible. Beth never thought she would see the man she loved after his disappearance when they were kids. Renner loves Beth with all of his heart, but didn’t even recognize her when he sees her again. What’s a cat shifter to do? Renner has to fight the path that all other cat shifters take in order to forge his own path to happiness and love. The path maybe fraught with tears and pain, but when your heart is on the love line you play for keeps and your HEA. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Renner Blackfoot is tired of going from random hookup to random hookup, and when he sees the new masseuse at the clan’s lodge, he has to meet her. Except he’s already met her - he doesn’t realize it’s his Bethy, the girl he treated like poo when they were kids because, well he’s a boy. It’s complicated, but romance does happen.
The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between
-Freebie sometimes you have to wade through alot of rocks to get a gem, but this is one.
-Who doesn’t like a shifter Christmas in July? Well, a little bit of Christmas, but it wasn’t so overwhelming that you felt like you’re spitting up tinsel, so I liked it.
-Novella length Read it in a couple of hours, and it was worth the time. Surprisingly well done ‘verse with good character development and intriguing shifter rules that aren’t the norm.
-Good chemistry between leads Renner was going through alot when he was a kid and took it out on Bethy, and she wanted to comfort him. But when it comes down to it, Renner really did care about her and the little things that proved to her that he cared was just sweet. There’s talk about his past hookups, but it’s all off page, and he is definitely all about Bethany.
-Not sure about the logic in not mating It’s different, but I’m not sure how I feel about this being the big obstacle, besides Bethy and Renner’s history. That said, I’d read more books set in this ‘verse, for sure.
The Bottom Line
I liked it and I bought the Ozark Mountain shifter bundle based on this book, so I'd say this freebie did its job. If you’re into shifter romances with a BBW heroine, check it out.
I enjoyed this short story. Other readers felt badly for Bethy, as did I, but I felt even worse for Renny's past experiences. I was touched and had tears in my eyes. But by the end of the book I had a smile on my face .
With the introduction of Bethy's brother and best friend there is potential for continued story lines and I hope the author will consider what her readers would like.
I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy reading about shifters and love.
P.S. If you are looking for an awesome shifter series check out Ms. Jameson's Ozark Mountain Shifters. Fantastic series!
This is my first time reading this author, although the series is on my mile-long TBR wish list. If you love paranormal and want to read about male were-cats finding their perfect mate, then this is the book for you. This is more of a story about a love lost and then found again. Renner, the Hero in the story lived in a foster family for a few years when he was younger, before he began to change into his jaguar, and that is where he met and fell in love with Bethany, the heroine. He recognized his mate right away, but b/c of the way he had seen male shifters in his clan act towards their mates while he was growing up, it was not exactly rosy, he wanted to spare Bethany from that pain so he did everything he could to make her think he hated her. Fast forward several years and Renner is living an unfulfilled life with his clan at a lodge they run for tourists and Bethany was hired to be a masseuse for the holiday season. She recognizes him right away, but it takes him longer and when he finally does all his feelings come surging right back. However, b/c of her past hurt, Bethany wants nothing to do with him. Tragedy almost strikes and they are forced to confront their true feelings about each other. I promise a HEA ending, but first they must deal with misconceptions from their past, plus a clan leader who never thinks their pairing could work. Will the Christmas holiday work to soften everyone's hearts? I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read the other books in this series.
If you like short Cat Shifter stories, with some sex scenes and HEA endings, then you'll likely enjoy this prequel. I did, even though I'm not that fond of short reads.
My problem with a book that is this short is that it doesn't have a fair opportunity to develop either the World or the characters. For instance Is the "Code" of the cat shifters to NOT take a true Mate the rule just for this clan, or does it apply to all the mountain cats? And why is the Hero a black cat if he's a mountain cat? I expected a Cougar, not a black cat. And what happened to the Poachers who shot our Hero? Who is Magic and how does he relate to Renner? Why is he the Boss, when Cats have little social structure (unlike Wolves)? There are just too many gaps in this story.
And the only suspense (other than the Poachers, which didn't last long) is this "Code", plus the fact that Renner had to work a little bit too hard to make his true love forgive and forget.
Overall, it wasn't bad. A longer length would have likely solved most of the above issues. Unfortunately, I looked at Book 1, and found that it really isn't much different in length. The one plus is that the books only appear to be 99¢ each, which is reasonable for short books.
