In 1916, the market for stolen antiquities is booming. When Jack Meade, an American oilman and antiquarian, buys an unsorted collection of old maps, he discovers a priceless Viking-era map hidden in the crate. The royal seal on the map is that of King Baldwin who claimed it for his collection during the Eleventh Century. The fabled Baldwin Portolano has an Old English riddle on it which points to the location of a multi-million dollar treasure hoard. Hidden in the riddle is a both a missing part of England's history and a threat to its future. If the German agents on Meade's trail get the map and decode it it first, the treasure could fund Germany's military advantage. British Intelligence dispatches a shell-shocked linguistic scholar from the trenches of France and a female physician, who is also an amateur archeologist, to assist Meade. The three must outrun Germany's top Secret Agent, outwit the ancient riddle-maker, and conquer their inner demons if England is to have its treasure, its history, and peace.

I loved this book too!!!Different pace & mood than The English Rendition... How does Ms. L. Write such different styles, yet both be so introspective? I was touched by how Crispin's PTSD panic attacks & nightmares were addressed by the Dr. & by Meade. I do hope our warriors & families & friends can empathize & benefit from this.
I'm hoping for a sequel. Hint, hint, hint! !

It's been a long while since a WWI story was written with such intrigue. Lt Crispin is the type of Tom Clancy - Jack Ryan character that I could see in future story lines. A really fun read, and a good book to take on vacation.
How might such diverse topics be tied together to tell a story? Lightholder has managed to do so in a most entertaining and informative way. This is a beautifully written and meticulously researched novel, certain to please both the fussy and the curious with it's attention to detail and clever explanations of historical fact. Well done!
I was on the edge of my seat reading Sharon Lightholder's new book. I was completely immersed in the feel of WW I England and loved her attention to detail. What a great idea to set what is essentially the chase after a valuable object in the middle of a war-torn country.
Her character development was great and I hope I will be meeting these characters in a possible sequel!
This is well written, well researched and captivating! The author successfully mixed history, languages, and classic literature with mystery and intrigue! Her detailed descriptions made the characters and settings come alive. I could envision it as a movie! Keep creating these amazing tomes, Sharon! You have tremendous talent and your dedication and hard work in creating believable yet fascinating stories is remarkable. Can't wait for your next book!
Ms. Lightholder is an up and comer as reflected in her second novel. Very thoroughly reesearched, well-written and fascinating. Can't wait 'til her next.
This is a very well written adventure novel about World War 1. It is obvious that the author did extensive research on what went on in that time period. Several passages had me on the edge of my seat. The characters are interesting & well fleshed out.
